John has more than fifteen years of experience defending individuals and entities in a wide range of federal and state criminal matters including investigations and prosecutions relating to securities fraud, money laundering, bank fraud, tax fraud, filing false tax returns, conspiracy to commit bribery, bribery of a Government official, conspiracy to make a false statement to a bank, making false statements, theft of Government funds, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit extortion and extortion. In addition, John has defended charges of narcotics trafficking and violent crimes such as conspiracy to distribute narcotics, distribution of narcotics, narco-terrorism, importation of controlled substances, murder, attempted murder, Hobbs Act robbery, and use of firearms in furtherance of a conspiracy. John also represents individuals in death penalty cases, including a case recently authorized for death by the United States Department of Justice. John has also represented hundreds of defendants on a number of state crimes and investigations and Federal Trade Commission investigations. He has also represented victims, individuals as grand jury witnesses, and has represented attorneys in disciplinary committee proceedings.
John is admitted to practice in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He is a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York where he is assigned to represent defendants in federal courthouses in Manhattan, White Plains, Brooklyn, and Central Islip. John is also a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel Selection Committee for the Eastern District of New York and formerly served as a member of the Board of Directors of the New York City Criminal Bar Association. In 2017 John was selected by the National Academy of Criminal Defense Attorneys into their “Top 10 Under 40.” John is also fluent in Spanish.
Prior to his private law practice, John served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office under then District Attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau, where he served in Trial Bureau 50 as unit supervisor to the Vice and Illegal Gambling unit in addition to the Counterfeit Manufacturing unit. He also served as a prosecutor in the Sex Crimes unit and was a founding member of the Identity Theft Unit, which has now become the Manhattan D.A.s Computer Crimes unit. During his appointment, John directed criminal investigations, presented matters to the grand jury for indictment, and served as lead prosecutor in trials. As a Manhattan prosecutor, John prosecuted over a thousand cases; including charges of Attempted Murder, Sexual Abuse, Assault, Driving while intoxicated, Robbery, Grand Larceny, Domestic violence-related offenses, Identity Theft, Burglary and Criminal Possession and sale of Controlled Substances.
John has also represented children as a member of the Attorneys for Children panel for the New York State Appellate Division of the First and Second Departments. In that capacity, he represented children who had been placed in foster care as a result of abuse and neglect, destitute children, and children accused of crimes in juvenile delinquency proceedings. John is also the founder of the Youth Outreach Program and frequently serves as a motivational speaker for at-risk youth throughout the five boroughs.
John attended Hunter College and graduated cum laude in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. He went on to attend City University of New York School of Law where he was elected as a representative to Student Government, was a member of the Moot Court team and was the 2003 Recipient of the Revson Public Interest Award and the 2004 Recipient of the Puerto Rican Bar Association Scholarship Award.
